As Thanksgiving week approached this year, Dearborn Public Schools students used their competitive spirit to collect food that will feed hundreds in need this holiday season. In the third annual “Battle Against Hunger,” Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford and Fordson, along with their “feeder” elementary and middle schools, collected 74,300 food items, filling a semi truck, to feed families in need through Gleaners Food Bank.
Edsel Ford High School and all of its feeder schools won the friendly city-wide competition by donating total of 28,691 food items. (Edsel Ford Students and faculty are shown in photo on right.) Dearborn High and its feeder schools collected 26,338 food items for Gleaners, and Fordson High School’s feeder schools donated 19,271 food items.
According to Gleaners Community Food Bank, 600,000 people in southeast Michigan don’t know where their next meal will come from. Now, they will.
The Battle Against Hunger began two years ago as an off-field competition between cross-town rivals Fordson and Dearborn to help feed families in need through Gleaners. This year, both schools wanted Edsel Ford involved, so the Thunderbirds more than simply obliged–they won the top honors for collecting the most food this year!
“This was a battle,” said Edsel Ford junior Zoe Rogula, one of the students who helped organized her school’s participation in the Battle and cheered her classmates on to winning the challenge.
“It was astonishing to see the schools and schools come together for one cause,” said Edsel Ford senior Gadi Bzeih. “I was crying tears of joy.”
“If everyone can focus on the same thing, look what we can accomplish,” said Dearborn High senior Maya Hamka. “Snap Chat this week was dominated by Battle Against Hunger posts this week, as opposed to what we’re used to. What a great thing to be a part of.”
“It is wonderful to see how our high school students and the students in their feeder schools have used friendly competition to unite the District to support a great cause,” says Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko.
“The generous work by our students will have a positive impact in the community. I am extremely proud of our students and the great work that they are doing to support those in need.”
Congratulations to all Dearborn schools for making a difference!
