Homes across Dearborn this week will receive copies of the District’s First Bell newsletter, which went to the printers in early March.
Obviously, a lot of things have changed in the last month.
- With Gov. Whitmer’s orders to shelter-in-place and that schools be closed for the rest of the academic year, the events featured in the newsletter are canceled. This includes the Care to the Core activities, Dearborn High Film Festival, the Dearborn Youth Arts Festival, in-person parent-teacher conferences, and summer camp registration fair. For parent-teacher conferences, parents are encouraged to reach out to their child’s teachers via email, especially if they have concerns.
- Board of Education and Henry Ford College Board meetings will continue, but will be held online.
- The District has decided not to have Impact Awards for staff this year. All of our employees deserve to be honored for stepping up during this challenging and uncharted time.
- Enrollment for Great Start Readiness Preschool has been delayed while the stay-at-home order is in place. Watch for more information at https://firstbell.dearbornschools.org when we figure out the logistics of taking applications to protect everyone involved.
Now in its third year, the First Bell printed newsletter is intended to provide all residents with information regarding Dearborn Public Schools, even if they do not interact with us directly in-person, online or on social media. The long lead time in printing and mailing provides the best price while reaching this goal. Previously, that just meant a little more planning on the part of our Communications Department to collect information well in advance of events.
But no one could have planned for COVID-19.
In the coming months, we will be reevaluating our use of the mailed newsletter. In the meantime, all of the Dearborn Public Schools community is encouraged to find the latest information at https://firstbell.dearbornschools.org.
