Pause to in-school instruction at Howe week of October 11th

October 8, 2021

Our district has been able to maintain a safe learning environment for our students and staff by following the district’s established COVID-19 protocols and being proactive in efforts to slow the spread of the virus. We appreciate our families and staff who have been supporting these efforts.

Out of an abundance of caution, and with support of the Wayne County Health Department the District has decided to pause in-school instruction for students and staff in the Howe Montessori and Howe Special Education program beginning Monday, October 11th and continuing through Friday, October 15th. This is a precautionary measure being taken by the district to protect students who may be more at risk of contracting COVID 19 due to preexisting conditions.

This pause in inperson instruction does not impact students who attend the Berry Center, DCMST, or the STEM Middle School. Those students, along with all other students in the district,  will continue to attend in person instruction next week.

Over the course of the past week, there have been 7 cases of COVID 19 at Howe but they are not connected and did not contract COVID while on school property.  We continue to work  closely with our district nurses and the Wayne County Health Department to complete contact tracing and to receive guidance for maintaining the health of the school community.  Again, this action is being taken to protect the wellbeing of our students and as a proactive step to mitigate possilbe further spread.

The District is sharing this information with our community so that you will have accurate details as to why the district is taking these precautionary measures. Again, this is a voluntary pause to in person instruction at Howe School only and is not part of any mandated closure.

The past 18 months have taught us that we must be flexible and supportive as we continue to work through the complexities brought on by COVID-19. By working together, keeping an open line of communication, and continuing to follow our layered approach to mitigating the spread of this virus we will continue to provide all students and staff with a safe learning environment.

Thank you and have a safe weekend.
