First day of school to be Aug. 28

Parents and staff mark your calendars!  (But only for August.)

Dearborn Public Schools will again start the school year on the Monday before Labor Day.

Students will return to class on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023.  Teachers will report back on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Parents of incoming kindergarten students, including Young 5s, are reminded those students have a soft start.  They will attend only a half day of school for the first two weeks from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8.

The district normally releases the following school year’s tentative calendar during the winter and then may make tweaks as needed.

However, this year the district is negotiating new contracts with most of its unions.  The school calendar is typically set as part of the contract with the Dearborn Federation of Teachers.

While that contract is not finalized, the union and district have agreed on the Aug. 28 start date for the new school year.  We do not know when we will be able to share the rest of the school year calendar.

Creating a district calendar requires numerous considerations starting with state requirements for the number of days and minutes students are in class.  The district also considers the Wayne RESA Common Calendar, with adjustments for factors important to Dearborn Schools such as closing for Eid al-Fitr.

The district’s most up-to-date calendar is always available on the website at https://dearbornschools.org/calendars/
