The Dearborn Public Schools Adult and Community Education Department, one of the largest adult education programs in the state, has moved and is now using space at Henry Ford College.
Adult and Community Education will remain a part of Dearborn Public Schools. The district and Henry Ford College are sister organizations with separate leadership and budgets but overseen by the same elected Board of Education.
Registration and some Adult Ed classes are now housed in Building K at the college, while the department’s offices have moved to Building E, Suite 172. Previously the offices were part of the district’s Dearborn Heights Campus at Ann Arbor Trail and Warren Avenue, about two miles from their new home. Adult Education can be reached at 313-317-5600, and Community Education is at 313-317-5700.
The move should help students in Adult Education as well as freeing up classroom space for other programs at the district’s Heights Campus, which includes the Michael Berry Career Center for high school students.
“Our adult students are better suited to a college campus environment, as it promotes a sense of comfort and belonging among peers. Being situated on a college campus will also be a valuable incentive for them to pursue further education after completing our program. Overall, we are excited about the opportunity to become an integral part of the college community and to provide our students with enhanced opportunities for personal growth and development,” said Ioanna Garrisi, Supervisor of Adult and Community Education.
Henry Ford College will house some Adult Education classes. Adult Education focuses on helping life-long learners with completing high school or getting a GED, learning English, or preparing for their United States citizenship tests. Some of those classes, particularly English, will still be offered at other sites in the community.
Community Education classes are held across Dearborn Public Schools and help adults and children pursue a wide range of interests such as fitness, hobbies, computers, foreign languages, cooking, art and more. Online registration for fall community education classes starts on Friday, Aug. 9 at dearbornschools.ce.eleyo.com. Phone registration begins on Monday, August 12.
