District eighth graders will be learning more about high school options in Dearborn Public Schools in December. Parents are invited to attend the sessions at their child’s school or one of two sessions planned via Zoom in December.
Each middle school will host a program about an hour long where students will learn more about the Henry Ford Early College and the Dearborn Center for Math Science and Technology. For both programs, students would need to decide this winter if they are interested in starting the program as ninth graders next fall. Henry Ford Early College is two schools offering three programs. All HFEC students attend school at Henry Ford College and in five years can earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree or trade certification at no cost to the family. The original Henry Ford Early College focuses on medical careers and, through a partnership with Henry Ford Health System, allows students to explore in person different medical fields. The district has created a promotional video with more information about the medical careers program. HFEC-Advanced Manufacturing allows students to pursue degrees such as drafting/CAD, automotive technology and mechatronics technology. The HFEC Pre-Education Program assists students interested in a career related to education such as becoming a teacher or paraprofessional.
The Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology is a half day program for high-achieving students interested in STEM studies. Students spend three class periods at their home high school – Fordson, Edsel Ford or Dearborn High – and are bused to and from DCMST at the Dearborn Heights Campus for the other half of the day.
Eighth grade students will learn more about DCMST and HFEC during presentations in December at their middle schools. Parents are invited to attend those sessions as well and should look for more information from their child’s school about dates and times.
Two Zoom sessions will also be offered for parents who cannot attend the daytime presentations at their child’s school and for parents who are considering transferring their child into Dearborn Public Schools for high school. The Henry Ford Early College programs accept students who live outside of the Dearborn Public School district, but still within Wayne County. A recording of the presentation will also be available after the Zoom session.
