Smith Middle School in Dearborn learned on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2025 that it has not one, but two Michigan Principals of the Year!
Mark Rummel was named Michigan Middle School Principal of the Year, and Maha Fayad was recognized as Michigan Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Michigan Association of Secondary Principals (MASSP). Smith Middle School is part of Dearborn Public Schools and has an enrollment of about 525 students.
MASSP representatives surprised Ms. Fayad and Mr. Rummel by visiting the school to make the announcement on Thursday afternoon.
“We’ve never had the principal and assistant principal from the same school win this recognition in a single year,” MASSP Executive Director Wendy Zdeb said. “With the amazing things this duo has accomplished, it’s no wonder they’ve achieved this honor.”
See the MASSP press release announcing the winners for more details.
By winning the state recognition, the two Dearborn Public Schools administrators are also entered in the competition for national principal of the year.
Mark Rummel has worked for 22.5 years in education, including seven as an administrator at Smith. Among the statements submitted in support of his nomination was “Principal Rummel exemplifies what it means to be a servant leader. His work is rooted in kindness, guided by purpose, and driven by the belief that every child deserves the best we can offer.”
Maha Fayad has worked in education for 24 years, including three as Assistant Principal at Smith. Her nominations included a statement, “What sets Ms. Fayad apart is her ability to lead with both head and heart. She is highly respected by teachers for being a supportive instructional coach and by students for being a steady, approachable mentor.”
Dearborn Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko praised the both administrators for their focus on students.
“Each and every day Principal Rummel and Assistant Principal Maha provide leadership that inspires their team to create a culture of learning and success at O.L. Smith. They demonstrate unwavering professionalism and a commitment to ensure all students feel welcome and are prepared for high school,” Dr. Maleyko said. “I appreciate and thank the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals for recognizing these two outstanding administrators in the Dearborn Public Schools.”
