Weather service changes advisories

Flier - The National Weather Service has new cold weather terms.

The winter season is upon us, and this year weather alerts will be looking a bit different.

The National Weather service has created new “cold weather terms” to distinguish when temps are dangerously low.  When this occurs you will see a “Cold Weather Advisory,” which means  the windchill temperature will be -15°F to -24°F.  An “Extreme Cold Warning” is when wind chill temperatures are -25°F or colder.

Dearborn Schools will consider closing schools when the wind chill temperatures are expected to be -20°F.  For elementary recess, if the windchill is below +20°F, recess will be held indoors for all elementary schools. Students should always dress appropriately for the weather. If parents are worried about conditions they always have the right to keep their child home.  See these tips from the National Weather Service for how to dress for cold weather.
