Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025 signed his contract to become the next State Superintendent for Michigan.

He took the oath of office on Monday, Sept. 15 in Dearborn, being sworn in by Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud.

Dr. Maleyko’s last official day with Dearborn Public Schools is expected to be Dec. 8, 2025.

“My entire professional history has centered on serving Dearborn Public Schools and our students,” Dr. Maleyko said. “While I will miss the wonderful connections I have made in this vibrant, diverse community, I am looking forward to working with the State Board of Education and the Michigan Department of Education, as well as other stakeholders, to advocate for all of Michigan’s children. My hope is to help lead the state to improve academic outcomes for all students.”

The State Board of Education on Aug. 26 selected Dr. Maleyko to serve as the next State Superintendent, overseeing the Michigan Department of Education. Since then, he has been working out details of the contact with State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. Last week, the State Board appointed Sue Carnell to serve as interim state superintendent when outgoing Superintendent Michael Rice retires on Oct. 3. Dr. Carnell is currently the state’s chief deputy superintendent.

Early in September, the Dearborn Board of Education completed Dr. Maleyko’s regular review. He received an “effective” ranking, the highest possible score under the state’s updated evaluation process, according to Board President Adel Mozip.

Dr. Maleyko has served for a decade as the district’s superintendent.  He started with Dearborn Public Schools almost 30 years ago as a substitute teacher, before moving on to become a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and then Executive Director of Human Resources before being appointed superintendent in 2015.

Dr. Maleyko became the district superintendent after the late Brian Whiston left to become the State Superintendent.

Dearborn Public Schools is the state’s third largest school district by enrollment.

Dr. Maleyko was president of the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators for the 2023-24 school year, represents Michigan on the National School Superintendents Association Governing Board, and chairs a statewide English learner committee that he created in 2023. He was on the original steering committee for the Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.

During his tenure as Dearborn superintendent, the district’s graduation rates have reached 95% and the district has earned six U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools Awards.

Dr. Maleyko earned a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Wayne State University; an educational specialist degree in educational leadership and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from University of Detroit Mercy; and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from University of Windsor.
