District releases 2026-27 calendar

For all the families and staff who like to plan ahead, Dearborn Public Schools is releasing the tentative calendar for the 2026-27 school year.

The first day of school will be a half day on Aug. 24, 2026.  That Monday is two weeks before Labor Day – earlier than the district usually starts in one sense – but only a day off from the first day of school on Aug. 25, 2025.  Teachers return to work on Aug. 19, 2026.

Aug. 21, 2026 will be school open houses in the afternoon.  Kindergarten and Young 5s students will have a half day of class from Monday, Aug. 24 through Thursday, Aug. 27 to help them acclimate to school.

Families also need to be flexible on planning for the last day of school in 2027.  Currently, the last day is set to be a half day on June 10, 2027, but that will change if the district needs to adjust the days off for Eid al Fitr in March. The current calendar calls for school to be closed March 10 and 11, 2027. However, if the Eid falls such that the district needs to add a day off on either March 9 or 12, then the last day of school will be moved to June 11, 2027.  (For 2026, June 11 is already the last day of school.)

For the 2026-27 school year, the district will also continue to have early dismissal every Tuesday from September through May. Dismissing students 90 minutes early provides teachers with time for professional development and to meet in professional learning communities.  Start and end times for full days, half days, and early dismissals are posted on the district’s website. Students will also have three Tuesdays off throughout the year for staff professional development, including Sept. 29, 2026; Nov. 3, 2026; and Feb. 23, 2027.

Many factors go into setting the school calendar each year.  State law dictates the number of days and minutes that students must be in class.  The district also considers the Wayne County RESA Common Calendar and negotiates other specifics with the Dearborn Federation of Teachers as part of that contract.  Cultural considerations also play a role in creating the calendar.

Small changes are often made to the calendar throughout the year.  The most up-to-date version of the calendar is always available on the district website at www.dearbornschools.org/calendars.  Printable versions of the calendar are posted at the top of the page.  Parents are reminded to check with their child’s school for important events and activities unique to their school and not appearing on the district calendar.
